Daily Devotional

Thou hast enlarged me when I Was in Distress! Psalms 4:1

David cried, “Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: Thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer.”

The Living Bible renders the same cry with tender clarity: “O God, You have declared me perfect in Your eyes; You have always cared for me in my distress; now hear me as I call again. Have mercy on me. Hear my prayer.”

The Hebrew picture is vivid:

Distress is tsar—narrowness, being squeezed, hemmed in, trapped in a defile with no way forward.

Enlargement is rachab—God making room, setting the soul in a broad place.

David does not first plead for a new miracle; he remembers the old ones. Saul’s javelin, the watched house, the siege at Keilah—again and again the Lord broke the rocks and gave him space. Past mercy becomes present faith.

That same pattern is the Gospel.

We were straitened by sin, Satan, and the law—bound, accused, unable to breathe.

Then Christ entered the tightest place of all: Gethsemane’s agony, the Cross’s enclosure, the grave’s cords.

An angel strengthened Him; He conquered His enemies; He was loosed from death and set in the large place of resurrection. The Gospel now proclaims liberty to the captives. The Spirit of the Lord, Who is liberty itself, enlarges cramped hearts so they can pray, praise, believe, and love again.

Enlargement is not always the removal of the trial. Sometimes God leaves the walls standing and simply widens the soul inside them.

Character is forged. Horizon stretches. Night falls, yet the stars of His faithfulness appear. The believer learns that the God who declared us righteous in Christ will not abandon us in the squeeze.

Therefore we pray as David prayed:

Not as strangers bargaining for relief, but as children recalling a Father who has already made room. Every remembered deliverance is a plea. Every present tightness is an invitation to call again.

The God of our righteousness still hears. He still enlarges.

And when the night is over, we lie down in peace, for He alone keeps us safe.

Count the words of that mercy and rest.

He has done it before.

He will do it again.

³Praise Him, sun and moon and all you twinkling stars.

⁴Praise Him, skies above. Praise Him, vapors high above the clouds.

⁵Let everything He has made give praise to Him. For He issued His command, and they came into being;

^{6 H}e established them forever and forever. His orders will never be revoked.

JESUS WAS THE SOLUTION BEFORE YOU HAD A SIN PROBLEM,

NEVER GET OVER WHAT JESUS HAS DONE FOR YOU!

THE PURPOSE OF THE CHURCH:

TO TEACH US TO LEAD OTHERS TO CHRIST!

9 Wisdom has built her house;
    she has hewn her seven pillars.
²She has slaughtered her beasts; she has mixed her wine;
    she has also set her table.
³She has sent out her young women to call
    from the highest places in the town,
⁴“Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!”
    To him who lacks sense she says,
⁵“Come, eat of my bread
    and drink of the wine I have mixed.
⁶Leave your simple ways,^[a] and live,
    and walk in the way of insight.”

⁷Whoever corrects a scoffer gets himself abuse,
    and he who reproves a wicked man incurs injury.
⁸Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you;
    reprove a wise man, and he will love you.
⁹Give instruction^[b] to a wise man, and he will be still wiser;
    teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.
¹⁰The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
    and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.
¹¹For by me your days will be multiplied,
    and years will be added to your life.
¹²If you are wise, you are wise for yourself;
    if you scoff, you alone will bear it.

The Way of Folly

¹³The woman Folly is loud;
    she is seductive^[c] and knows nothing.
¹⁴She sits at the door of her house;
    she takes a seat on the highest places of the town,
¹⁵calling to those who pass by,
    who are going straight on their way,
¹⁶“Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!”
    And to him who lacks sense she says,
¹⁷“Stolen water is sweet,
    and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.”
¹⁸But he does not know that the dead^[d] are there,
    that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.

CHAPTER 39 JEREMIAH for today: (SEPTEMBER 9 (LN) (ESV)

39 In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army came against Jerusalem and besieged it. ²In the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, on the ninth day of the month, a breach was made in the city. ³Then all the officials of the king of Babylon came and sat in the middle gate: Nergal-sar-ezer of Samgar, Nebu-sar-sekim the Rab-saris, Nergal-sar-ezer the Rab-mag, with all the rest of the officers of the king of Babylon. ⁴When Zedekiah king of Judah and all the soldiers saw them, they fled, going out of the city at night by way of the king’s garden through the gate between the two walls; and they went toward the Arabah. ⁵But the army of the Chaldeans pursued them and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho. And when they had taken him, they brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, at Riblah, in the land of Hamath; and he passed sentence on him. ⁶The king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah at Riblah before his eyes, and the king of Babylon slaughtered all the nobles of Judah. ⁷He put out the eyes of Zedekiah and bound him in chains to take him to Babylon. ⁸The Chaldeans burned the king’s house and the house of the people, and broke down the walls of Jerusalem. ⁹Then Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, carried into exile to Babylon the rest of the people who were left in the city, those who had deserted to him, and the people who remained. ¹⁰Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, left in the land of Judah some of the poor people who owned nothing, and gave them vineyards and fields at the same time.

The Lord Delivers Jeremiah

¹¹Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon gave command concerning Jeremiah through Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, saying, ¹²“Take him, look after him well, and do him no harm, but deal with him as he tells you.” ¹³So Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, Nebushazban the Rab-saris, Nergal-sar-ezer the Rab-mag, and all the chief officers of the king of Babylon ¹⁴sent and took Jeremiah from the court of the guard. They entrusted him to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, that he should take him home. So he lived among the people.

¹⁵The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah while he was shut up in the court of the guard: ¹⁶“Go, and say to Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will fulfill my words against this city for harm and not for good, and they shall be accomplished before you on that day. ¹⁷But I will deliver you on that day, declares the Lord, and you shall not be given into the hand of the men of whom you are afraid. ¹⁸For I will surely save you, and you shall not fall by the sword, but you shall have your life as a prize of war, because you have put your trust in me, declares the Lord.’”

Revelation 12

for today: (SEPTEMBER 9 (NN) ESV)

12 And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. ²She was pregnant and was crying out in birth pains and the agony of giving birth. ³And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads seven diadems. ⁴His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven and cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she bore her child he might devour it. ⁵She gave birth to a male child, one who is to rule^[a] all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was caught up to God and to his throne, ⁶and the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, in which she is to be nourished for 1,260 days.

Satan Thrown Down to Earth

⁷Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, ⁸but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. ⁹And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. ¹⁰And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers^[b] has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. ¹¹And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death. ¹²Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!”

¹³And when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. ¹⁴But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle so that she might fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to the place where she is to be nourished for a time, and times, and half a time. ¹⁵The serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, to sweep her away with a flood. ¹⁶But the earth came to the help of the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed the river that the dragon had poured from his mouth. ¹⁷Then the dragon became furious with the woman and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring, on those who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus. And he stood^[c] on the sand of the sea.

The Steps to Salvation:
