Are You Found Wanting?

King Belshazzar threw a wild feast, drinking wine from the sacred cups stolen from God’s Temple while praising lifeless idols of gold and stone.

Suddenly a hand appeared and wrote on the plaster wall:

Mene, Mene, Tekel, Parsin.

Daniel, unafraid of the king’s gifts, told him the meaning. “Tekel means ‘weighed’—you have been weighed in God’s balances and have failed the test” (Daniel 5:27, TLB)!

(Mene means “numbered”—God has numbered the days of your reign, and they are ended.
Parsin means “divided”—your kingdom will be divided and given to the Medes and Persians.)

That very night Belshazzar was killed and his kingdom fell!

God still weighs lives. He does not use the world’s scales of: success, wealth, or reputation.

He weighs the heart against His own holiness!

Pride, idolatry, and refusal to honor the God who gives every breath will always come up light.

Belshazzar knew what had happened to his predecessor Nebuchadnezzar, yet he would not humble himself. Knowledge without repentance only increases guilt.

The same verdict hangs over every person:

“Yes, all have sinned; all fall short of God’s glorious ideal” (Romans 3:23, TLB). We have been weighed and found wanting. No amount of good works, church attendance, or moral effort can add enough weight to the scale. The standard is perfect righteousness, and we do not have it!

There is only One who was never found wanting:

Jesus Christ lived the flawless life we could not live and died the death we deserved.

On the cross He was weighed in our place. When we trust Him, God no longer sees our deficiency; He sees the perfect righteousness of His Son credited to us. We are declared “not guilty” by faith, not by performance.

The writing on the wall was both warning and mercy. God numbered Belshazzar’s days so he might still repent.

Our days are numbered too. The question is not whether we will be weighed, but whether we will come to Christ before the scales stop.

Humble yourself.

Turn from self-rule.

Trust the One who never failed the test.

Then, instead of “found wanting,” you will hear “well done.”

Time is short.

The balances of God do not wait.

AMEN!

⁵Let everything He has made give praise to Him. For He issued His command, and they came into being;

JESUS WAS THE SOLUTION BEFORE YOU HAD A SIN PROBLEM,

NEVER GET OVER WHAT JESUS HAS DONE FOR YOU!

NOW:

THE PURPOSE OF THE CHURCH:

TO TEACH US TO LEAD OTHERS TO CHRIST!

8 Does not wisdom call?
    Does not understanding raise her voice?
²On the heights beside the way,
    at the crossroads she takes her stand;
³beside the gates in front of the town,
    at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud:
⁴“To you, O men, I call,
    and my cry is to the children of man.
⁵O simple ones, learn prudence;
    O fools, learn sense.
⁶Hear, for I will speak noble things,
    and from my lips will come what is right,
⁷for my mouth will utter truth;
    wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
⁸All the words of my mouth are righteous;
    there is nothing twisted or crooked in them.
⁹They are all straight to him who understands,
    and right to those who find knowledge.
¹⁰Take my instruction instead of silver,
    and knowledge rather than choice gold,
¹¹for wisdom is better than jewels,
    and all that you may desire cannot compare with her.

¹²“I, wisdom, dwell with prudence,
    and I find knowledge and discretion.
¹³The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil.

    and delighting in the children of man.

³²“And now, O sons, listen to me:
    blessed are those who keep my ways.
³³Hear instruction and be wise,
    and do not neglect it.
³⁴Blessed is the one who listens to me,
    watching daily at my gates,
    waiting beside my doors.
³⁵For whoever finds me finds life
    and obtains favor from the Lord,
³⁶but he who fails to find me injures himself;
    all who hate me love death.”

CHAPTER 39 JEREMIAH for today: (SEPTEMBER 8 (LN) (ESV)

38 Now Shephatiah the son of Mattan, Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of Malchiah heard the words that Jeremiah was saying to all the people: ²“Thus says the Lord: He who stays in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence, but he who goes out to the Chaldeans shall live. He shall have his life as a prize of war, and live. ³Thus says the Lord: This city shall surely be given into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon and be taken.” ⁴Then the officials said to the king, “Let this man be put to death, for he is weakening the hands of the soldiers who are left in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking such words to them. For this man is not seeking the welfare of this people, but their harm.” ⁵King Zedekiah said, “Behold, he is in your hands, for the king can do nothing against you.” ⁶So they took Jeremiah and cast him into the cistern of Malchiah, the king’s son, which was in the court of the guard, letting Jeremiah down by ropes. And there was no water in the cistern, but only mud, and Jeremiah sank in the mud.

Jeremiah Rescued from the Cistern

⁷When Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch who was in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern—the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate— ⁸Ebed-melech went from the king’s house and said to the king, ⁹“My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they did to Jeremiah the prophet by casting him into the cistern, and he will die there of hunger, for there is no bread left in the city.” ¹⁰Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, “Take thirty men with you from here, and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.” ¹¹So Ebed-melech took the men with him and went to the house of the king, to a wardrobe in the storehouse, and took from there old rags and worn-out clothes, which he let down to Jeremiah in the cistern by ropes. ¹²Then Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, “Put the rags and clothes between your armpits and the ropes.” Jeremiah did so. ¹³Then they drew Jeremiah up with ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

Jeremiah Warns Zedekiah Again

¹⁴King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet and received him at the third entrance of the temple of the Lord. The king said to Jeremiah, “I will ask you a question; hide nothing from me.” ¹⁵Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I tell you, will you not surely put me to death? And if I give you counsel, you will not listen to me.” ¹⁶Then King Zedekiah swore secretly to Jeremiah, “As the Lord lives, who made our souls, I will not put you to death or deliver you into the hand of these men who seek your life.”

¹⁷Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “Thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: If you will surrender to the officials of the king of Babylon, then your life shall be spared, and this city shall not be burned with fire, and you and your house shall live. ¹⁸But if you do not surrender to the officials of the king of Babylon, then this city shall be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and you shall not escape from their hand.” ¹⁹King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Judeans who have deserted to the Chaldeans, lest I be handed over to them and they deal cruelly with me.” ²⁰Jeremiah said, “You shall not be given to them. Obey now the voice of the Lord in what I say to you, and it shall be well with you, and your life shall be spared. ²¹But if you refuse to surrender, this is the vision which the Lord has shown to me: ²²Behold, all the women left in the house of the king of Judah were being led out to the officials of the king of Babylon and were saying,

“‘Your trusted friends have deceived you
and prevailed against you;
now that your feet are sunk in the mud,
they turn away from you.’

²³All your wives and your sons shall be led out to the Chaldeans, and you yourself shall not escape from their hand, but shall be seized by the king of Babylon, and this city shall be burned with fire.”

²⁴Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Let no one know of these words, and you shall not die. ²⁵If the officials hear that I have spoken with you and come to you and say to you, ‘Tell us what you said to the king and what the king said to you; hide nothing from us and we will not put you to death,’ ²⁶then you shall say to them, ‘I made a humble plea to the king that he would not send me back to the house of Jonathan to die there.’” ²⁷Then all the officials came to Jeremiah and asked him, and he answered them as the king had instructed him. So they stopped speaking with him, for the conversation had not been overheard. ²⁸And Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was taken.

Revelation 11

for today: (SEPTEMBER 8 (NN) ESV)

11 Then I was given a measuring rod like a staff, and I was told, “Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and those who worship there, ²but do not measure the court outside the temple; leave that out, for it is given over to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for forty-two months. ³And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth.”

⁴These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth. ⁵And if anyone would harm them, fire pours from their mouth and consumes their foes. If anyone would harm them, this is how he is doomed to be killed. ⁶They have the power to shut the sky, that no rain may fall during the days of their prophesying, and they have power over the waters to turn them into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague, as often as they desire. ⁷And when they have finished their testimony, the beast that rises from the bottomless pit^[a] will make war on them and conquer them and kill them, ⁸and their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city that symbolically^[b] is called Sodom and Egypt, where their Lord was crucified. ⁹For three and a half days some from the peoples and tribes and languages and nations will gaze at their dead bodies and refuse to let them be placed in a tomb, ¹⁰and those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them and make merry and exchange presents, because these two prophets had been a torment to those who dwell on the earth. ¹¹But after the three and a half days a breath of life from God entered them, and they stood up on their feet, and great fear fell on those who saw them. ¹²Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here!” And they went up to heaven in a cloud, and their enemies watched them. ¹³And at that hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.

¹⁴The second woe has passed; behold, the third woe is soon to come.

The Seventh Trumpet

¹⁵Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.” ¹⁶And the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones before God fell on their faces and worshiped God, ¹⁷saying,

“We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty,
    who is and who was,
for you have taken your great power
    and begun to reign.
¹⁸The nations raged,
    but your wrath came,
    and the time for the dead to be judged,
and for rewarding your servants, the prophets and saints,
    and those who fear your name,
    both small and great,
and for destroying the destroyers of the earth.”

¹⁹Then God’s temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant was seen within his temple. There were flashes of lightning, rumblings,^[c] peals of thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail.

The Steps to Salvation:
