Simon Peter, “the Rock”  #5195

April 10

Daily Devotional

Simon Peter, “the Rock”

He is one of the most prominent figures in the New Testament and early Christian tradition. He was a Galilean fisherman from Bethsaida who became one of Jesus’ closest disciples, a key leader among the apostles and the foundational figure (“the Rock”) upon which the early Church was built.

His story is one of human failure, divine forgiveness, and bold leadership, symbolizing redemption and the transformative power of faith.

Background and Calling as “the Rock”

Peter was originally named Simon (or Shimon bar Yonah), son of Jonah, and worked as a fisherman on the Sea of Galilee along with his brother Andrew.

Jesus called him and Andrew while they were fishing, saying, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19; Mark 1:16–18). Peter quickly became part of Jesus’ inner circle of disciples (along with James and John), witnessing key events like the Transfiguration and the raising of Jairus’ daughter.

Jesus renamed him Cephas (Aramaic for “rock” or “stone”), rendered as Petros (Peter) in Greek. The pivotal moment came in Matthew 16:13–19, when Peter confessed Jesus as “the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus replied: “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah… You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.” This “rock” declaration (and the “keys”) is central to Christian views of Peter’s special role.

Catholic and Orthodox traditions see it as establishing Peter’s primacy (and the papacy’s foundation), while many Protestants interpret the “rock” as Peter’s confession of faith or Christ Himself.

Regardless, Peter emerged as the spokesman and leader among the Twelve Apostles.

He was impulsive and passionate—walking briefly on water toward Jesus (Matthew 14:22–33), drawing a sword to defend Jesus during the arrest (John 18:10), and promising unwavering loyalty (“Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you!”—Matthew 26:35).

Peter’s Denial of Jesus

Despite his bold promises, Peter famously denied knowing Jesus three times during Jesus’ arrest and trial, just as Jesus had predicted: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times” (Matthew 26:34; also in Mark 14:30, Luke 22:34, John 13:38).

This happened in the courtyard of the high priest while Jesus was being interrogated. Peter was recognized by a servant girl and others; each time he denied it more vehemently, even cursing and swearing (Matthew 26:69–75; Mark 14:66–72; Luke 22:54–62; John 18:15–27).

When the rooster crowed and Jesus looked at him, Peter “went outside and wept bitterly.” This moment of failure is recorded in all four Gospels, highlighting Peter’s humanity and the reality of weakness under pressure.

Restoration After the Resurrection and Leadership of the Disciples

After Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection, Peter was fully restored. In John 21:15–19, by the Sea of Galilee, the risen Jesus asked Peter three times, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” (mirroring the three denials). Each time Peter affirmed his love, and Jesus commissioned him: “Feed my lambs… Take care of my sheep… Feed my sheep.”

Jesus also hinted at Peter’s future martyrdom (“You will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go”). This reinstatement affirmed Peter’s ongoing leadership role.

In the Book of Acts, Peter immediately stepped up as the clear leader of the apostles and early believers:

•  He led the selection of Judas’ replacement (Acts 1).

•  At Pentecost (Acts 2), filled with the Holy Spirit, he preached boldly to thousands, resulting in about 3,000 conversions—the “birthday” of the Church.

•  He performed miracles (e.g., healing a lame man at the temple, Acts 3) and confronted authorities fearlessly (Acts 4).

•  He was imprisoned but miraculously freed (Acts 12).

•  He was the first apostle to extend the Gospel to Gentiles, baptizing the Roman centurion Cornelius after a vision (Acts 10–11).

•  He presided at the Council of Jerusalem (Acts 15), helping decide that Gentile converts did not need full Jewish law observance.

Tradition holds that Peter ministered in Antioch (where “Christians” were first named) and eventually Rome, serving as its first bishop (and, in Catholic tradition, the first Pope). The New Testament letters 1 Peter and 2 Peter are attributed to him.

Peter’s Later Life and Martyrdom

Peter’s missionary work took him beyond Jerusalem. Early Church Fathers (Irenaeus, Tertullian, Eusebius, etc.) confirm he spent his later years in Rome, founding the church there (possibly with Paul). Under Emperor Nero’s persecution after the Great Fire of Rome (AD 64), Peter was martyred around AD 64–68.

Tradition says he requested crucifixion upside down, feeling unworthy to die exactly like Jesus.

His tomb is traditionally located beneath St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.

Peter’s arc—from denying Jesus to leading the Church—embodies themes of grace, repentance, and empowerment by the Holy Spirit.

The Growth of Christianity

Christianity began as a small Jewish sect in Judea around AD 30–33, following Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension. It started with roughly 120 believers in Jerusalem but exploded through the apostles’ witness, especially Peter’s Pentecost sermon.

Key early milestones (1st century):

•  Pentecost (c. AD 33): The Holy Spirit empowered the disciples; Peter’s preaching led to rapid growth in Jerusalem.

•  Persecution scattered believers (e.g., after Stephen’s martyrdom, Acts 7–8), but this actually aided the spread.

•  Apostles like Peter focused on Jews initially; Paul (converted c. AD 35) became the “Apostle to the Gentiles,” undertaking missionary journeys across the Roman Empire using roads, trade routes, and synagogues.

•  Council of Jerusalem (c. AD 48–50): Opened the faith fully to non-Jews without requiring circumcision or full Torah observance.

•  By AD 100, small house churches existed in major cities (Rome, Antioch, Alexandria, Ephesus), with perhaps 10,000+ believers total.

Explosive yet steady growth despite persecution (2nd–4th centuries):

•  Christianity spread via urban networks, community support for the poor/widows/orphans, high moral standards, hope in resurrection, and reports of miracles/healings. It appealed across classes, especially to women, slaves, and the marginalized with its message of equality and eternal life.

•  Persecutions (Nero in 64, Decius, Diocletian) were sporadic but intense—yet martyrs’ courage often attracted converts.

•  Scholarly estimates (e.g., sociologist Rodney Stark’s model): Starting from ~1,000 around AD 40, a compounding ~40% growth per decade (or ~3.4% annually) led to 200,000+ by AD 200 and possibly 1–6 million (up to ~10% of the ~60-million-person Roman Empire) by AD 300.

Pivotal shifts:

•  Roman Emperor Constantine’s conversion (after the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, 312) and the Edict of Milan (313) legalized Christianity, ending official persecution.

•  By the late 4th century, Emperor Theodosius I made it the official state religion (c. 380).

•  It spread to Armenia (first Christian nation, early 4th century), Ethiopia, and beyond the empire.

By the 5th century, Christianity dominated the Mediterranean world and laid foundations for medieval Europe. Factors included Roman infrastructure (Pax Romana), missionary zeal, strong communal bonds, and its universal (“catholic”) appeal. Today, it is the world’s largest religion with over 2.3–2.6 billion adherents (~31% of global population), having spread globally through further missions and cultural adaptation.

Peter’s leadership in those fragile first decades was foundational—his boldness, vision for including Gentiles, and example of redemption helped launch a movement that transformed the Roman Empire and beyond.

His story continues to inspire Christians as one of failure redeemed into faithful service.

You may be telling yourself right now:

I WANT A NEW LIFE;

I WANT TO KNOW MY SIN IS FORGIVEN;

I WANT TO KNOW THAT I HAVE ETERNAL LIFE;

I WANT TO RECEIVE HIM NOW;

I WANT TO RECOMMIT MY LIFE TO CHRIST;

I WANT TO SETTLE THIS THING;

I WANT CHRIST TONIGHT:

Please read the following to settle all of this:

HOW TO GET TO HEAVEN WHEN YOU DIE:

How to be “Born Again”

John 3:16 makes it pretty clear: You have to Believe on Jesus Christ and you will be saved! No matter who you are! No matter what you have done wrong in your life, KNOW THAT GOD, JESUS AND THE HOLY SPIRIT LOVES YOU!

To “Believe” upon Jesus means that:

**********************************************************************

1.) You Believe that Jesus is the Son of God, that He died on the Cross at Calvary as payment for ALL of your sins, was buried in a borrowed tomb and Arose from the dead on the 3rd Day we call Easter and accept Him as your Personal Savior by Faith;

**********************************************************************

2. You Repent of your sinful ways (Breaking God’s Laws in the 10 Commandments:

a.) Worship only God,

b.) Have no other gods before Him,

c.) Don’t use His Name in vain,

d.) Remember the Sabbath and keep it Holy,

e.) Honor your Parents,

f.) Don’t kill anyone,

g.) Don’t commit adultery,

h.) Don’t Steal,

i.) Don’t lie about other people or yourself &

j.) Don’t Covet anything that is your neighbors) and try to stop sinning;

*********************************************************************

3.) You give complete control of your life to Jesus Christ!

Doing these 3 things, you will be “Born Again” Spiritually and the Holy Spirit will enter your Soul, SEAL your position PERMANENTLY in Heaven and WRITE YOUR NAME IN THE “LAMB’S BOOK OF LIFE!” Again: See Revelation Chapter 20 Verse 15 to see why that is CRITICALLY important:

Revelation 20:15 – And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire”

Let us Praise Him Daily!

A good way to learn to Praise God is to memorize the first 6 Verses of Psalms 148:

1 Praise the Lord, O heavens! Praise Him from the skies!

Praise Him, all His angels, all the armies of heaven.

Praise Him, sun and moon and all you twinkling stars.

Praise Him, skies above. Praise Him, vapors high above the clouds.

Let everything He has made give praise to Him. For He issued His command, and they came into being;

6 He established them forever and forever. His orders will never be revoked.

Chapter 10 in Proverbs for today: (APR 10 (MT) (ESV)

10 The proverbs of Solomon.

A wise son makes a glad father,
    but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother.
Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit,
    but righteousness delivers from death.
The Lord does not let the righteous go hungry,
    but he thwarts the craving of the wicked.
A slack hand causes poverty,
    but the hand of the diligent makes rich.
He who gathers in summer is a prudent son,
    but he who sleeps in harvest is a son who brings shame.
Blessings are on the head of the righteous,
    but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.[a]
The memory of the righteous is a blessing,
    but the name of the wicked will rot.
The wise of heart will receive commandments,
    but a babbling fool will come to ruin.
Whoever walks in integrity walks securely,
    but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.
10 Whoever winks the eye causes trouble,
    and a babbling fool will come to ruin.
11 The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life,
    but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.
12 Hatred stirs up strife,
    but love covers all offenses.
13 On the lips of him who has understanding, wisdom is found,
    but a rod is for the back of him who lacks sense.
14 The wise lay up knowledge,
    but the mouth of a fool brings ruin near.
15 A rich man’s wealth is his strong city;
    the poverty of the poor is their ruin.
16 The wage of the righteous leads to life,
    the gain of the wicked to sin.
17 Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life,
    but he who rejects reproof leads others astray.
18 The one who conceals hatred has lying lips,
    and whoever utters slander is a fool.
19 When words are many, transgression is not lacking,
    but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.
20 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver;
    the heart of the wicked is of little worth.
21 The lips of the righteous feed many,
    but fools die for lack of sense.
22 The blessing of the Lord makes rich,
    and he adds no sorrow with it.[b]
23 Doing wrong is like a joke to a fool,
    but wisdom is pleasure to a man of understanding.
24 What the wicked dreads will come upon him,
    but the desire of the righteous will be granted.
25 When the tempest passes, the wicked is no more,
    but the righteous is established forever.
26 Like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes,
    so is the sluggard to those who send him.
27 The fear of the Lord prolongs life,
    but the years of the wicked will be short.
28 The hope of the righteous brings joy,
    but the expectation of the wicked will perish.
29 The way of the Lord is a stronghold to the blameless,
    but destruction to evildoers.
30 The righteous will never be removed,
    but the wicked will not dwell in the land.
31 The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom,
    but the perverse tongue will be cut off.
32 The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable,
    but the mouth of the wicked, what is perverse.

CHAPTER 129 IN PSALMS for today: (APR 10 (TLZ) (ESV)

129 “Greatly[a] have they afflicted me from my youth”—
    let Israel now say—
“Greatly have they afflicted me from my youth,
    yet they have not prevailed against me.
The plowers plowed upon my back;
    they made long their furrows.”
The Lord is righteous;
    he has cut the cords of the wicked.
May all who hate Zion
    be put to shame and turned backward!
Let them be like the grass on the housetops,
    which withers before it grows up,
with which the reaper does not fill his hand
    nor the binder of sheaves his arms,
nor do those who pass by say,
    “The blessing of the Lord be upon you!
    We bless you in the name of the Lord!”

Revelation 18 for today: (APR 10 (NN) ESV)

18 After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was made bright with his glory. And he called out with a mighty voice,

“Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great!
    She has become a dwelling place for demons,
a haunt for every unclean spirit,
    a haunt for every unclean bird,
    a haunt for every unclean and detestable beast.
For all nations have drunk[a]
    the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality,
and the kings of the earth have committed immorality with her,
    and the merchants of the earth have grown rich from the power of her luxurious living.”

Then I heard another voice from heaven saying,

“Come out of her, my people,
    lest you take part in her sins,
lest you share in her plagues;
for her sins are heaped high as heaven,
    and God has remembered her iniquities.
Pay her back as she herself has paid back others,
    and repay her double for her deeds;
    mix a double portion for her in the cup she mixed.
As she glorified herself and lived in luxury,
    so give her a like measure of torment and mourning,
since in her heart she says,
    ‘I sit as a queen,
I am no widow,
    and mourning I shall never see.’
For this reason her plagues will come in a single day,
    death and mourning and famine,
and she will be burned up with fire;
    for mighty is the Lord God who has judged her.”

And the kings of the earth, who committed sexual immorality and lived in luxury with her, will weep and wail over her when they see the smoke of her burning. 10 They will stand far off, in fear of her torment, and say,

“Alas! Alas! You great city,
    you mighty city, Babylon!
For in a single hour your judgment has come.”

11 And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn for her, since no one buys their cargo anymore, 12 cargo of gold, silver, jewels, pearls, fine linen, purple cloth, silk, scarlet cloth, all kinds of scented wood, all kinds of articles of ivory, all kinds of articles of costly wood, bronze, iron and marble, 13 cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and slaves, that is, human souls.[b]

14 “The fruit for which your soul longed
    has gone from you,
and all your delicacies and your splendors
    are lost to you,
    never to be found again!”

15 The merchants of these wares, who gained wealth from her, will stand far off, in fear of her torment, weeping and mourning aloud,

16 “Alas, alas, for the great city
    that was clothed in fine linen,
        in purple and scarlet,
    adorned with gold,
        with jewels, and with pearls!
17 For in a single hour all this wealth has been laid waste.”

And all shipmasters and seafaring men, sailors and all whose trade is on the sea, stood far off 18 and cried out as they saw the smoke of her burning,

“What city was like the great city?”

19 And they threw dust on their heads as they wept and mourned, crying out,

“Alas, alas, for the great city
    where all who had ships at sea
    grew rich by her wealth!
For in a single hour she has been laid waste.
20 Rejoice over her, O heaven,
    and you saints and apostles and prophets,
for God has given judgment for you against her!”

21 Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying,

“So will Babylon the great city be thrown down with violence,
    and will be found no more;
22 and the sound of harpists and musicians, of flute players and trumpeters,
    will be heard in you no more,
and a craftsman of any craft
    will be found in you no more,
and the sound of the mill
    will be heard in you no more,
23 and the light of a lamp
    will shine in you no more,
and the voice of bridegroom and bride
    will be heard in you no more,
for your merchants were the great ones of the earth,
    and all nations were deceived by your sorcery.
24 And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints,
    and of all who have been slain on earth.”

AND ROSE FROM THE DEAD!”

The Steps to Salvation:

> Repent: Repentance means that you are turning away from sin to turn to Christ. It does NOT mean that you will be perfect.

> Believe/Receive: Salvation is through Faith in Jesus and by the Grace of God. Believing means putting your Faith in Jesus and receiving forgiveness of sin.
