The Nine Fruits of the Spirit!

In Galatians 5:22-23 of The Living Bible we read these life-changing words: “But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives he will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control; and here there is no conflict with Jewish laws.”

Notice carefully that the apostle Paul speaks of fruit—singular—not fruits. These nine qualities are not a menu of separate virtues we pick and choose. They form one unified harvest that the Holy Spirit produces in every believer who yields daily control to Him. Just as a healthy tree does not struggle to manufacture apples, the Spirit-filled life does not strain to manufacture godly character. The fruit appears naturally when the Holy Spirit is in charge.

Love heads the list because it is the root from which all the others grow. This is not mere emotion or preference; it is the self-giving, sacrificial love that seeks another’s highest good even at personal cost. 

Joy follows—not the fleeting happiness that depends on circumstances, but the deep gladness that remains when circumstances turn bitter, because Christ remains. 

Peace is the settled calm of a heart that knows God is still on the throne, no matter how the storms rage outside.

Patience (or longsuffering) is the Spirit’s power to endure difficult people and delayed answers without exploding or quitting. 

Kindness is that warm readiness to help, to speak gently, and to ease another’s burden. 

Goodness is moral integrity in action—doing what is right simply because it is right, even when no one is watching. 

Faithfulness is reliability: keeping our word, standing by our commitments, and remaining loyal to the Lord and to others when it would be easier to walk away.

Gentleness is strength under control—power that refuses to crush the weak or answer harshness with harshness. 

Self-control is the Spirit’s mastery over appetite, tongue, temper, and time, so that we are no longer driven by every impulse of the flesh.

These nine qualities stand in sharp contrast to the works of the flesh listed just before them. Where the flesh produces hatred, strife, jealousy, and self-seeking, the Spirit produces the opposite. And Paul adds the wonderful assurance that “here there is no conflict with Jewish laws.” No law can condemn the life that the Spirit produces.

The key is control. The fruit does not grow by human effort or New Year’s resolutions. It grows when we daily surrender the throne of our hearts and let the Holy Spirit rule. 

As we walk in step with Him—through prayer, the Word, and obedience—He quietly transforms our character until others begin to see Jesus in us.

This is the Spirit-filled life: not a frantic striving to be better, but a resting in the One who produces the fruit. May we yield more fully each day so that love, joy, peace, and all the rest may abound to the glory of God.

3 Praise Him, sun and moon and all you twinkling stars.

4 Praise Him, skies above. Praise Him, vapors high above the clouds.

5 Let everything He has made give praise to Him. For He issued His command, and they came into being;

6 He established them forever and forever. His orders will never be revoked.

HE IS OUR FESTIVAL OF HOPE,

OUR PARDON,

GIVEN 1ST PLACE IN EVERYTHING,

HAS BEEN EXALTED AS SUPREME OVER EVERYTHING,

IS ENOUGH,

THE FULLNESS OF GOD DWELLS IN US THROUGH JESUS,

JESUS HAS BROUGHT US INTO HARMONY WITH GOD,

HE HAS BROKERED A PEACE TREATY BETWEEN GOD & MAN,

YOU WERE BORN ON THE WRONG SIDE, BUT BY ACCEPTING JESUS

YOU ARE ON THE RIGHT SIDE NOW,

YOU ARE BEYOND REPROACH,

JESUS WAS THE SOLUTION BEFORE YOU HAD A SIN PROBLEM,

NEVER GET OVER WHAT JESUS HAS DONE FOR YOU!

NOW:

THE PURPOSE OF THE CHURCH:

TO TEACH US TO LEAD OTHERS TO CHRIST!

AMEN!

29 He who is often reproved, yet stiffens his neck,
    will suddenly be broken beyond healing.
2 When the righteous increase, the people rejoice,
    but when the wicked rule, the people groan.
3 He who loves wisdom makes his father glad,
    but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth.
4 By justice a king builds up the land,
    but he who exacts gifts[a] tears it down.
5 A man who flatters his neighbor
    spreads a net for his feet.
6 An evil man is ensnared in his transgression,
    but a righteous man sings and rejoices.
7 A righteous man knows the rights of the poor;
    a wicked man does not understand such knowledge.
8 Scoffers set a city aflame,
    but the wise turn away wrath.
9 If a wise man has an argument with a fool,
    the fool only rages and laughs, and there is no quiet.
10 Bloodthirsty men hate one who is blameless
    and seek the life of the upright.[b]
11 A fool gives full vent to his spirit,
    but a wise man quietly holds it back.
12 If a ruler listens to falsehood,
    all his officials will be wicked.
13 The poor man and the oppressor meet together;
    the Lord gives light to the eyes of both.
14 If a king faithfully judges the poor,
    his throne will be established forever.
15 The rod and reproof give wisdom,
    but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.
16 When the wicked increase, transgression increases,
    but the righteous will look upon their downfall.
17 Discipline your son, and he will give you rest;
    he will give delight to your heart.
18 Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint,[c]
    but blessed is he who keeps the law.
19 By mere words a servant is not disciplined,
    for though he understands, he will not respond.
20 Do you see a man who is hasty in his words?
    There is more hope for a fool than for him.
21 Whoever pampers his servant from childhood
    will in the end find him his heir.[d]
22 A man of wrath stirs up strife,
    and one given to anger causes much transgression.
23 One’s pride will bring him low,
    but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.
24 The partner of a thief hates his own life;
    he hears the curse, but discloses nothing.
25 The fear of man lays a snare,
    but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.
26 Many seek the face of a ruler,
    but it is from the Lord that a man gets justice.
27 An unjust man is an abomination to the righteous,
    but one whose way is straight is an abomination to the wicked.

    that the mountains might quake at your presence—

to make your name known to your adversaries,
    and that the nations might tremble at your presence!
3 When you did awesome things that we did not look for,
    you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence.
4 From of old no one has heard
    or perceived by the ear,
no eye has seen a God besides you,
    who acts for those who wait for him.
5 You meet him who joyfully works righteousness,
    those who remember you in your ways.
Behold, you were angry, and we sinned;
    in our sins we have been a long time, and shall we be saved?[b]
6 We have all become like one who is unclean,
    and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.
We all fade like a leaf,
    and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
7 There is no one who calls upon your name,
    who rouses himself to take hold of you;

8 But now, O Lord, you are our Father;
    we are the clay, and you are our potter;
    we are all the work of your hand.
9 Be not so terribly angry, O Lord,
    and remember not iniquity forever.
    Behold, please look, we are all your people.
10 Your holy cities have become a wilderness;
    Zion has become a wilderness,
    Jerusalem a desolation.

has been burned by fire,
    and all our pleasant places have become ruins.
12 Will you restrain yourself at these things, O Lord?
    Will you keep silent, and afflict us so terribly?

“Great and amazing are your deeds,
    O Lord God the Almighty!
Just and true are your ways,
    O King of the nations![a]
4 Who will not fear, O Lord,
    and glorify your name?
For you alone are holy.
    All nations will come
    and worship you,
for your righteous acts have been revealed.”

5 After this I looked, and the sanctuary of the tent[b] of witness in heaven was opened, 6 and out of the sanctuary came the seven angels with the seven plagues, clothed in pure, bright linen, with golden sashes around their chests. 7 And one of the four living creatures gave to the seven angels seven golden bowls full of the wrath of God who lives forever and ever, 8 and the sanctuary was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from his power, and no one could enter the sanctuary until the seven plagues of the seven angels were finished.
