“Except a man be born of the water and the Spirit, he cannot be born again and enter heaven” Jesus

Jesus told Nicodemus, “Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God” (John 3:5, TLB).

That sentence stands at the center of the new birth. Nicodemus was a teacher of Israel, a Pharisee who knew the Law and the prophets, yet he came by night because he could not explain the signs Jesus was doing.

Jesus did not offer him a better ritual or a tighter observance. He told him that what he already possessed was not enough to enter heaven.

“Born of water” has been read in more than one way. Some hear natural birth, the water of the womb, so that Jesus is saying a man must be born once of flesh and then again of the Spirit. Water and Spirit stand together as the single condition of entrance.

Flesh can only produce flesh. Religious knowledge, moral effort, and descent from Abraham cannot cross the threshold. The kingdom is entered by a birth that God alone gives.

“Born of the Spirit” is the work of the Holy Spirit in regeneration. The Spirit convicts of sin, opens the eyes to the Son, and plants a new nature that did not exist before. Jesus compared it to the wind: you hear its sound and see its effects, yet you do not command its coming. The new birth is not a decision we manufacture. It is life imparted. The one who is born again believes that God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, and that whoever trusts Him will not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16, TLB).

Faith is the evidence that the Spirit has already done His work.

Without that birth there is no entrance.

Jesus did not say the unregenerate man finds heaven difficult. He said he cannot enter. The old nature remains under condemnation.

Heaven is not a reward for improved behavior; it is the home of those who have been made new. The cross supplies the ground of forgiveness, and the Spirit applies that work to the heart.

What Nicodemus needed, every person still needs: To be born from above: Of water and the Spirit, or remain outside the Kingdom!

²It shall come to pass in the latter days
    that the mountain of the house of the Lord
shall be established as the highest of the mountains,
    and shall be lifted up above the hills;
and all the nations shall flow to it,
³    and many peoples shall come, and say:
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
    to the house of the God of Jacob,
that he may teach us his ways
    and that we may walk in his paths.”
For out of Zion shall go forth the law,^[a]

²And I saw what appeared to be a sea of glass mingled with fire—and also those who had conquered the beast and its image and the number of its name, standing beside the sea of glass with harps of God in their hands. ³And they sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying,

“Great and amazing are your deeds,
    O Lord God the Almighty!
Just and true are your ways,
    O King of the nations!^[a]
⁴Who will not fear, O Lord,
    and glorify your name?
For you alone are holy.
    All nations will come
    and worship you,
for your righteous acts have been revealed.”
