Who is your Neighbor? #5,369

Who is your Neighbor?

The question “Who is my neighbor?” is older than our arguments about borders, tribes, and comfort.

It comes from a lawyer who stood up to test Jesus and asked what he must do to inherit eternal life (Luke 10:25).

Jesus sent him back to the Law he already knew: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind, and love your neighbor as yourself. Wanting to justify himself, the man narrowed the command: “And who is my neighbor?”

Jesus did not hand him a definition he could manage. He told a story. A traveler on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho fell among robbers, was stripped, beaten, and left half dead. A priest saw him and passed by on the other side. A Levite did the same. Then a Samaritan came—the very person a religious Jew was trained to despise as unclean and foreign. He was moved with compassion, bound the wounds, poured on oil and wine, set the man on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and paid for his care, promising to settle whatever else was owed.

The neighbor, Jesus taught, is not fixed by address, ancestry, synagogue roll, or shared opinion. When He asked which of the three proved neighbor to the wounded man, the lawyer could not bring himself to say “the Samaritan.” He answered, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus said, “Go and do likewise.”

That answer reaches back to Leviticus 19:18 and forward into the whole New Testament. The priest and the Levite knew the text; the outsider practiced its heart.

Scripture keeps widening the circle: The stranger, the widow, the orphan, even the enemy. Jesus commands love for those who curse and persecute (Matthew 5:43–44).

Paul says the entire law is fulfilled in loving your neighbor as yourself (Galatians 5:14; Romans 13:8–10). James calls mercy the test of a faith that is alive.

The gospel answers the question before we do. We were the man on that road—robbed of righteousness, unable to rise, passed by every system that could not save us. God did not cross to the other side. In Christ He crossed every barrier, bore our wounds, and paid the full cost.

Those who have received that mercy are sent to extend it. Neighbor-love is not a feeling about people like us. It is costly action toward the person in need placed before us, especially the one we would rather avoid.

Mercy makes a neighbor.

Go and do likewise.

AMEN!

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

He descended to the dead.

On the third day He rose again;

He ascended into heaven,

He is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Christian Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting.

Amen.

Let us Praise Him Daily!

A good way to learn to Praise God is to memorize the first 6 Verses of Psalms 148:

1 Praise the Lord, O heavens! Praise Him from the skies!

2 Praise Him, all His angels, all the armies of heaven.

3 Praise Him, sun and moon and all you twinkling stars.

4 Praise Him, skies above. Praise Him, vapors high above the clouds.

5 Let everything He has made give praise to Him. For He issued His command, and they came into being;

6 He established them forever and forever. His orders will never be revoked.

PLEASE read the last 6 Chapters of Psalms: 145-150 so that you will learn how to Praise God like David did!

Chapter 02 in Proverbs for today: (OCTOBER 2 (MT) (ESV)

  1. 2 My son, if you receive my words
        and treasure up my commandments with you,
    2 making your ear attentive to wisdom
        and inclining your heart to understanding;
    3 yes, if you call out for insight
        and raise your voice for understanding,
    4 if you seek it like silver
        and search for it as for hidden treasures,
    5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord
        and find the knowledge of God.
    6 For the Lord gives wisdom;
        from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;
    7 he stores up sound wisdom for the upright;
        he is a shield to those who walk in integrity,
    8 guarding the paths of justice
        and watching over the way of his saints.
    9 Then you will understand righteousness and justice
        and equity, every good path;
    10 for wisdom will come into your heart,
        and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul;
    11 discretion will watch over you,
        understanding will guard you,
    12 delivering you from the way of evil,
        from men of perverted speech,
    13 who forsake the paths of uprightness
        to walk in the ways of darkness,
    14 who rejoice in doing evil
        and delight in the perverseness of evil,
    15 men whose paths are crooked,
        and who are devious in their ways.

    16 So you will be delivered from the forbidden[a] woman,
        from the adulteress[b] with her smooth words,
    17 who forsakes the companion of her youth
        and forgets the covenant of her God;
    18 for her house sinks down to death,
        and her paths to the departed;[c]
    19 none who go to her come back,
        nor do they regain the paths of life.

    20 So you will walk in the way of the good
        and keep to the paths of the righteous.
    21 For the upright will inhabit the land,
        and those with integrity will remain in it,
    22 but the wicked will be cut off from the land,
        and the treacherous will be rooted out of it.

CHAPTER 3 LAMENTATIONS for today: (OCTOBER 2 (L) (ESV)

3 I am the man who has seen affliction
    under the rod of his wrath;
2 he has driven and brought me
    into darkness without any light;
3 surely against me he turns his hand
    again and again the whole day long.

4 He has made my flesh and my skin waste away;
    he has broken my bones;
5 he has besieged and enveloped me
    with bitterness and tribulation;
6 he has made me dwell in darkness
    like the dead of long ago.

7 He has walled me about so that I cannot escape;
    he has made my chains heavy;
8 though I call and cry for help,
    he shuts out my prayer;
9 he has blocked my ways with blocks of stones;
    he has made my paths crooked.

10 He is a bear lying in wait for me,
    a lion in hiding;
11 he turned aside my steps and tore me to pieces;
    he has made me desolate;
12 he bent his bow and set me
    as a target for his arrow.

13 He drove into my kidneys
    the arrows of his quiver;
14 I have become the laughingstock of all my people,[a]
    the object of their taunts all day long.
15 He has filled me with bitterness;
    he has sated me with wormwood.

16 He has made my teeth grind on gravel,
    and made me cower in ashes;
17 my soul is bereft of peace;
    I have forgotten what happiness[b] is;
18 so I say, “My endurance has perished;
    so has my hope from the Lord.”

19 Remember my affliction and my wanderings,
    the wormwood and the gall!
20 My soul continually remembers it
    and is bowed down within me.
21 But this I call to mind,
    and therefore I have hope:

22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;[c]
    his mercies never come to an end;
23 they are new every morning;
    great is your faithfulness.
24 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,
    “therefore I will hope in him.”

25 The Lord is good to those who wait for him,
    to the soul who seeks him.
26 It is good that one should wait quietly
    for the salvation of the Lord.
27 It is good for a man that he bear
    the yoke in his youth.

28 Let him sit alone in silence
    when it is laid on him;
29 let him put his mouth in the dust—
    there may yet be hope;
30 let him give his cheek to the one who strikes,
    and let him be filled with insults.

31 For the Lord will not
    cast off forever,
32 for, though he cause grief, he will have compassion
    according to the abundance of his steadfast love;
33 for he does not afflict from his heart
    or grieve the children of men.

34 To crush underfoot
    all the prisoners of the earth,
35 to deny a man justice
    in the presence of the Most High,
36 to subvert a man in his lawsuit,
    the Lord does not approve.

37 Who has spoken and it came to pass,
    unless the Lord has commanded it?
38 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High
    that good and bad come?
39 Why should a living man complain,
    a man, about the punishment of his sins?

40 Let us test and examine our ways,
    and return to the Lord!
41 Let us lift up our hearts and hands
    to God in heaven:
42 “We have transgressed and rebelled,
    and you have not forgiven.

43 “You have wrapped yourself with anger and pursued us,
    killing without pity;
44 you have wrapped yourself with a cloud
    so that no prayer can pass through.
45 You have made us scum and garbage
    among the peoples.

46 “All our enemies
    open their mouths against us;
47 panic and pitfall have come upon us,
    devastation and destruction;
48 my eyes flow with rivers of tears
    because of the destruction of the daughter of my people.

49 “My eyes will flow without ceasing,
    without respite,
50 until the Lord from heaven
    looks down and sees;
51 my eyes cause me grief
    at the fate of all the daughters of my city.

52 “I have been hunted like a bird
    by those who were my enemies without cause;
53 they flung me alive into the pit[d]
    and cast stones on me;
54 water closed over my head;
    I said, ‘I am lost.’

55 “I called on your name, O Lord,
    from the depths of the pit;
56 you heard my plea, ‘Do not close
    your ear to my cry for help!’
57 You came near when I called on you;
    you said, ‘Do not fear!’

58 “You have taken up my cause, O Lord;
    you have redeemed my life.
59 You have seen the wrong done to me, O Lord;
    judge my cause.
60 You have seen all their vengeance,
    all their plots against me.

61 “You have heard their taunts, O Lord,
    all their plots against me.
62 The lips and thoughts of my assailants
    are against me all the day long.
63 Behold their sitting and their rising;
    I am the object of their taunts.

64 “You will repay them,[e] O Lord,
    according to the work of their hands.
65 You will give them[f] dullness of heart;
    your curse will be[g] on them.
66 You will pursue them[h] in anger and destroy them
    from under your heavens, O Lord.”[i]

Revelation 10

for today: (OCTOBER  2 (NN) ESV)

10 Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven, wrapped in a cloud, with a rainbow over his head, and his face was like the sun, and his legs like pillars of fire. 2 He had a little scroll open in his hand. And he set his right foot on the sea, and his left foot on the land, 3 and called out with a loud voice, like a lion roaring. When he called out, the seven thunders sounded. 4 And when the seven thunders had sounded, I was about to write, but I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Seal up what the seven thunders have said, and do not write it down.” 5 And the angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land raised his right hand to heaven 6 and swore by him who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and what is in it, the earth and what is in it, and the sea and what is in it, that there would be no more delay, 7 but that in the days of the trumpet call to be sounded by the seventh angel, the mystery of God would be fulfilled, just as he announced to his servants the prophets.

8 Then the voice that I had heard from heaven spoke to me again, saying, “Go, take the scroll that is open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.” 9 So I went to the angel and told him to give me the little scroll. And he said to me, “Take and eat it; it will make your stomach bitter, but in your mouth it will be sweet as honey.” 10 And I took the little scroll from the hand of the angel and ate it. It was sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had eaten it my stomach was made bitter. 11 And I was told, “You must again prophesy about many peoples and nations and languages and kings.”

Please Remember:

“CHRIST DIED FOR OUR SINS

AND ROSE FROM THE DEAD!”

The Steps to Salvation:

> Repent: Repentance means that you are turning away from sin to turn to Christ. It does NOT mean that you will be perfect.

> Believe/Receive: Salvation is through Faith in Jesus and by the Grace of God. Believing means putting your Faith in Jesus and receiving forgiveness of sin.

>Walk in the Newness of Life: Jesus died so that we might live. We walk in the Newness of Life being Born Again by His Blood.
