Remember Lot’s Wife!

Jesus spoke only three words, yet they thunder across the centuries: “Remember Lot’s wife!” (Luke 17:32, TLB).

He was describing the sudden day of His return—when life will still look ordinary, people eating, buying, planting, building—until fire falls. Then He added the warning: those on the rooftop must not go back for possessions; those in the field must not return to town. “Remember what happened to Lot’s wife! Whoever clings to his life shall lose it, and whoever loses his life shall save it” (Luke 17:31-33, TLB).

The story is brief and terrible. Angels dragged Lot, his wife, and two daughters out of doomed Sodom. “Flee for your lives,” they commanded. “And don’t look back. Escape to the mountains. Don’t stay down here on the plain or you will die” (Genesis 19:17, TLB). Mercy had already seized their hands. Deliverance was already in motion. One simple command remained: do not look back!

She looked back. “Lot’s wife looked back as she was following along behind him and became a pillar of salt” (Genesis 19:26, TLB). That glance was no idle curiosity. It was a heart still chained to the city God had condemned—its comforts, its friends, its familiar sins. She had left Sodom with her feet, but Sodom had never left her heart. In that moment of divided loyalty she became a monument of judgment!

The lesson is not merely historical. Jesus applies it to every soul facing the coming revelation of the Son of Man. Attachment to this present world is deadly when God calls us out. Privileges cannot save us—Lot’s wife lived with a righteous man, heard the angels, felt their mercy, and still perished. Outward obedience is not enough if the heart still longs for what God has judged.

The gospel offers the only escape. Christ Himself is the way out of the city of destruction. He does not merely warn; He rescues. He calls us to lose the old life so that we may keep the true one. Salvation is not clinging to what is passing; it is fleeing to the mountain of His grace and never looking back.

Today the command still stands. Business as usual continues until the hour arrives.

Remember Lot’s wife.

Leave the old life behind.

Fix your eyes on Jesus.

The one who loses his life for His sake will save it.

30 The words of Agur son of Jakeh. The oracle.^[a]

The man declares, I am weary, O God;
    I am weary, O God, and worn out.^[b]
²Surely I am too stupid to be a man.
    I have not the understanding of a man.
³I have not learned wisdom,
    nor have I knowledge of the Holy One.
⁴Who has ascended to heaven and come down?
    Who has gathered the wind in his fists?
Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment?
    Who has established all the ends of the earth?
What is his name, and what is his son’s name?
    Surely you know!

⁵Every word of God proves true;
    he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
⁶Do not add to his words,
    lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.

⁷Two things I ask of you;
    deny them not to me before I die:
⁸Remove far from me falsehood and lying;
    give me neither poverty nor riches;

CHAPTER 1 LAMENTATIONS for today: (SEPTEMBER 30 (L) (ESV)

1 How lonely sits the city
    that was full of people!
How like a widow has she become,
    she who was great among the nations!
She who was a princess among the provinces
    has become a slave.

²She weeps bitterly in the night,
    with tears on her cheeks;
among all her lovers
    she has none to comfort her;
all her friends have dealt treacherously with her;
    they have become her enemies.

³Judah has gone into exile because of affliction^[a]
    and hard servitude;
she dwells now among the nations,
    but finds no resting place;
her pursuers have all overtaken her
    in the midst of her distress.^[b]

⁴The roads to Zion mourn,
    for none come to the festival;
all her gates are desolate;
    her priests groan;
her virgins have been afflicted,^[c]
    and she herself suffers bitterly.

⁵Her foes have become the head;
    her enemies prosper,
because the Lord has afflicted her

⁸Jerusalem sinned grievously;
    therefore she became filthy;
all who honored her despise her,
    for they have seen her nakedness;
she herself groans
    and turns her face away.

⁹Her uncleanness was in her skirts;
    she took no thought of her future;^[d]
therefore her fall is terrible;
    she has no comforter.

    for the enemy has triumphed!”

¹⁰The enemy has stretched out his hands

Revelation 08

8 When the Lamb opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. ²Then I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them. ³And another angel came and stood at the altar with a golden censer, and he was given much incense to offer with the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar before the throne, ⁴and the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before God from the hand of the angel. ⁵Then the angel took the censer and filled it with fire from the altar and threw it on the earth, and there were peals of thunder, rumblings,^[a] flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.

The Seven Trumpets

⁶Now the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to blow them.

⁷The first angel blew his trumpet, and there followed hail and fire, mixed with blood, and these were thrown upon the earth. And a third of the earth was burned up, and a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up.

⁸The second angel blew his trumpet, and something like a great mountain, burning with fire, was thrown into the sea, and a third of the sea became blood. ⁹A third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

¹⁰The third angel blew his trumpet, and a great star fell from heaven, blazing like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. ¹¹The name of the star is Wormwood.^[b] A third of the waters became wormwood, and many people died from the water, because it had been made bitter.

¹²The fourth angel blew his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, and a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of their light might be darkened, and a third of the day might be kept from shining, and likewise a third of the night.

¹³Then I looked, and I heard an eagle crying with a loud voice as it flew directly overhead, “Woe, woe, woe to those who dwell on the earth, at the blasts of the other trumpets that the three angels are about to blow!”
