Are You Spiritually Dead?

A corpse can still look busy!

It can sit in church, quote verses, vote, work, and even talk about God. But Paul does not flatter us. “Once you were under God’s curse, doomed forever for your sins… even though we were spiritually dead and doomed by our sins” (Ephesians 2:1, 5, TLB).

That is not a figure of speech. Spiritual death is real: Cut off from the life of God, deaf to His voice, slaves of “Satan, the mighty prince of the power of the air,” born with “evil natures,” and under wrath (Ephesians 2:2–3, TLB).

You were “dead in sins, and your sinful desires were not yet cut away” (Colossians 2:13, TLB). The heart still beats. The mind still plans. Yet the soul is a grave. Sin pays wages, and “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23, TLB). That death began in Eden the moment man chose himself over God, and it continues in every unregenerate life: No hunger for holiness, no power against the flesh, no fellowship with the Father!

Jesus did not come to decorate the tomb. He came to empty it. “I say emphatically that anyone who listens to my message and believes in God who sent me has eternal life, and will never be damned for his sins, but has already passed out of death into life” (John 5:24, TLB).

Notice the tense: Already Passed! The new birth is not a future hope only; it is a present crossing. God “gave us back our lives again when He raised Christ from the dead—only by His undeserved Favor have we ever been saved” (Ephesians 2:5, TLB). He “gave you a share in the very life of Christ, for He forgave all your sins” (Colossians 2:13, TLB).

So the question is not whether you are religious. It is whether you are alive. Have you heard His voice and believed? Has the old nature been buried with Him and a new life raised with Him? If not, you are still among the walking dead—doomed, yet offered mercy this very hour!

Cry out.

Trust the Risen Christ.

Pass from death into life while the door is open.

Time is short!

Eternity is not!

⁴Praise Him, skies above. Praise Him, vapors high above the clouds.

⁵Let everything He has made give praise to Him. For He issued His command, and they came into being;

^{6 H}e established them forever and forever. His orders will never be revoked.

6 My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor,
    have given your pledge for a stranger,
²if you are snared in the words of your mouth,
    caught in the words of your mouth,
³then do this, my son, and save yourself,
    for you have come into the hand of your neighbor:
    go, hasten,^[a] and plead urgently with your neighbor.
⁴Give your eyes no sleep
    and your eyelids no slumber;
⁵save yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,^[b]
    like a bird from the hand of the fowler.

⁶Go to the ant, O sluggard;
    consider her ways, and be wise.
⁷Without having any chief,
    officer, or ruler,
⁸she prepares her bread in summer
    and gathers her food in harvest.
⁹How long will you lie there, O sluggard?
    When will you arise from your sleep?
¹⁰A little sleep, a little slumber,
    a little folding of the hands to rest,
¹¹and poverty will come upon you like a robber,
    and want like an armed man.

¹²A worthless person, a wicked man,
    goes about with crooked speech,

¹⁹a false witness who breathes out lies,
    and one who sows discord among brothers.

Warnings Against Adultery

²⁰My son, keep your father’s commandment,
    and forsake not your mother’s teaching.
²¹Bind them on your heart always;
    tie them around your neck.
²²When you walk, they^[d] will lead you;
    when you lie down, they will watch over you;
    and when you awake, they will talk with you.
²³For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light,
    and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life,
²⁴to preserve you from the evil woman,^[e]
    from the smooth tongue of the adulteress.^[f]
²⁵Do not desire her beauty in your heart,
    and do not let her capture you with her eyelashes;
²⁶for the price of a prostitute is only a loaf of bread,^[g]
    but a married woman^[h] hunts down a precious life.
²⁷Can a man carry fire next to his chest
    and his clothes not be burned?
²⁸Or can one walk on hot coals
    and his feet not be scorched?
²⁹So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife;
    none who touches her will go unpunished.
³⁰People do not despise a thief if he steals
    to satisfy his appetite when he is hungry,
³¹but if he is caught, he will pay sevenfold;
    he will give all the goods of his house.
³²He who commits adultery lacks sense;
    he who does it destroys himself.
³³He will get wounds and dishonor,
    and his disgrace will not be wiped away.
³⁴For jealousy makes a man furious,

    he will refuse though you multiply gifts.

CHAPTER 37 JEREMIAH for today: (SEPTEMBER 6 (LN) (ESV)

37 Zedekiah the son of Josiah, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah, reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim. ²But neither he nor his servants nor the people of the land listened to the words of the Lord that he spoke through Jeremiah the prophet.

³King Zedekiah sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah the priest, the son of Maaseiah, to Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “Please pray for us to the Lord our God.” ⁴Now Jeremiah was still going in and out among the people, for he had not yet been put in prison. ⁵The army of Pharaoh had come out of Egypt. And when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard news about them, they withdrew from Jerusalem.

⁶Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet: ⁷“Thus says the Lord, God of Israel: Thus shall you say to the king of Judah who sent you to me to inquire of me, ‘Behold, Pharaoh’s army that came to help you is about to return to Egypt, to its own land. ⁸And the Chaldeans shall come back and fight against this city. They shall capture it and burn it with fire. ⁹Thus says the Lord, Do not deceive yourselves, saying, “The Chaldeans will surely go away from us,” for they will not go away. ¹⁰For even if you should defeat the whole army of Chaldeans who are fighting against you, and there remained of them only wounded men, every man in his tent, they would rise up and burn this city with fire.’”

Jeremiah Imprisoned

¹¹Now when the Chaldean army had withdrawn from Jerusalem at the approach of Pharaoh’s army, ¹²Jeremiah set out from Jerusalem to go to the land of Benjamin to receive his portion there among the people. ¹³When he was at the Benjamin Gate, a sentry there named Irijah the son of Shelemiah, son of Hananiah, seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “You are deserting to the Chaldeans.” ¹⁴And Jeremiah said, “It is a lie; I am not deserting to the Chaldeans.” But Irijah would not listen to him, and seized Jeremiah and brought him to the officials. ¹⁵And the officials were enraged at Jeremiah, and they beat him and imprisoned him in the house of Jonathan the secretary, for it had been made a prison.

¹⁶When Jeremiah had come to the dungeon cells and remained there many days, ¹⁷King Zedekiah sent for him and received him. The king questioned him secretly in his house and said, “Is there any word from the Lord?” Jeremiah said, “There is.” Then he said, “You shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.” ¹⁸Jeremiah also said to King Zedekiah, “What wrong have I done to you or your servants or this people, that you have put me in prison? ¹⁹Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you and against this land’? ²⁰Now hear, please, O my lord the king: let my humble plea come before you and do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the secretary, lest I die there.” ²¹So King Zedekiah gave orders, and they committed Jeremiah to the court of the guard. And a loaf of bread was given him daily from the bakers’ street, until all the bread of the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

Revelation 09

for today: (SEPTEMBER 6 (NN) ESV)

9 And the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star fallen from heaven to earth, and he was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit.^[a] ²He opened the shaft of the bottomless pit, and from the shaft rose smoke like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened with the smoke from the shaft. ³Then from the smoke came locusts on the earth, and they were given power like the power of scorpions of the earth. ⁴They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any green plant or any tree, but only those people who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. ⁵They were allowed to torment them for five months, but not to kill them, and their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it stings someone. ⁶And in those days people will seek death and will not find it. They will long to die, but death will flee from them.

⁷In appearance the locusts were like horses prepared for battle: on their heads were what looked like crowns of gold; their faces were like human faces, ⁸their hair like women’s hair, and their teeth like lions’ teeth; ⁹they had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the noise of their wings was like the noise of many chariots with horses rushing into battle. ¹⁰They have tails and stings like scorpions, and their power to hurt people for five months is in their tails. ¹¹They have as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit. His name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek he is called Apollyon.^[b]

¹²The first woe has passed; behold, two woes are still to come.

¹³Then the sixth angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar before God, ¹⁴saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” ¹⁵So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour, the day, the month, and the year, were released to kill a third of mankind. ¹⁶The number of mounted troops was twice ten thousand times ten thousand; I heard their number. ¹⁷And this is how I saw the horses in my vision and those who rode them: they wore breastplates the color of fire and of sapphire^[c] and of sulfur, and the heads of the horses were like lions’ heads, and fire and smoke and sulfur came out of their mouths. ¹⁸By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed, by the fire and smoke and sulfur coming out of their mouths. ¹⁹For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails, for their tails are like serpents with heads, and by means of them they wound.

²⁰The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands nor give up worshiping demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk, ²¹nor did they repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.

The Steps to Salvation:
