Why did God give us a Conscience?

In the garden of Eden, God the Creator planted the Tree of Conscience, granting humanity knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:9 TLB). This act was no accident; it marked the birth of our inner moral compass. Scripture reveals that God deliberately bestowed the conscience as a gracious gift—an internal witness to His holy standards, a searchlight for the soul, and a guide toward redemption.

The conscience serves first as God’s universal law written on every heart. Even those who never received the written Law of Moses possess this innate knowledge. As Romans 2:14-15 TLB explains, “For down in their hearts they know right from wrong. God’s laws are written within them; their own conscience accuses them, or sometimes excuses them.” Through it, God ensures that all people—Jew and Gentile alike—are accountable. No one can claim ignorance; the conscience accuses wrongdoing and affirms righteousness, reflecting the Creator’s justice and desire for moral order in a fallen world.

Second, the conscience functions as a divine searchlight exposing hidden motives. Proverbs 20:27 TLB declares, “A man’s conscience is the Lord’s searchlight exposing his hidden motives.” It pierces self-deception, revealing sin that might otherwise remain concealed. This exposure convicts us, prompting repentance and preventing the destruction that unchecked evil brings. God gave this gift because He loves us and refuses to abandon us to moral darkness.

Finally, the conscience guards faith and relationships with God and others. Paul urged, “Cling tightly to your faith in Christ and always keep your conscience clear, doing what you know is right” (1 Timothy 1:19 TLB). He himself strove “with all [his] strength to always maintain a clear conscience before God and man” (Acts 24:16 TLB). A clear conscience fosters intimacy with the Savior; a seared or ignored one leads to spiritual shipwreck.

Ultimately, God gave us a conscience to draw us to Himself. It reveals our sinfulness, highlights our need for Christ’s cleansing blood, and equips us to live holy lives. In a world of moral confusion, this inner voice remains God’s merciful provision—calling us from darkness into the light of His presence.

28 The wicked flee when no one pursues,
    but the righteous are bold as a lion.
²When a land transgresses, it has many rulers,
    but with a man of understanding and knowledge,
    its stability will long continue.
³A poor man who oppresses the poor
    is a beating rain that leaves no food.
⁴Those who forsake the law praise the wicked,
    but those who keep the law strive against them.
⁵Evil men do not understand justice,
    but those who seek the Lord understand it completely.
⁶Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity
    than a rich man who is crooked in his ways.
⁷The one who keeps the law is a son with understanding,
    but a companion of gluttons shames his father.
⁸Whoever multiplies his wealth by interest and profit^[a]
    gathers it for him who is generous to the poor.

on that very day his plans perish.

⁵Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
    whose hope is in the Lord his God,
⁶who made heaven and earth,
    the sea, and all that is in them,
who keeps faith forever;
⁷    who executes justice for the oppressed,
    who gives food to the hungry.

The Lord sets the prisoners free;

Revelation 13 for today: (APR 28 (NN) ESV)

13 And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, with ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems on its horns and blasphemous names on its heads. ²And the beast that I saw was like a leopard; its feet were like a bear’s, and its mouth was like a lion’s mouth. And to it the dragon gave his power and his throne and great authority. ³One of its heads seemed to have a mortal wound, but its mortal wound was healed, and the whole earth marveled as they followed the beast. ⁴And they worshiped the dragon, for he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast, and who can fight against it?”

⁵And the beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months. ⁶It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling,^[a] that is, those who dwell in heaven. ⁷Also it was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them.^[b] And authority was given it over every tribe and people and language and nation, ⁸and all who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain. ⁹If anyone has an ear, let him hear:

¹⁰If anyone is to be taken captive,

Here is a call for the endurance and faith of the saints.

The Second Beast

¹¹Then I saw another beast rising out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon. ¹²It exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence,^[c] and makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose mortal wound was healed. ¹³It performs great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in front of people, ¹⁴and by the signs that it is allowed to work in the presence of^[d] the beast it deceives those who dwell on earth, telling them to make an image for the beast that was wounded by the sword and yet lived. ¹⁵And it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might even speak and might cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain. ¹⁶Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave,^[e] to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, ¹⁷so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name. ¹⁸This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666.^[f]

The Steps to Salvation:
