OUR PILGRIM FATHERS!
The Complete History of the Pilgrim Fathers: From English Separatism to the Foundations of American Independence, 1608–1776
The Pilgrim Fathers, a term later romanticized in American lore to encompass the Separatist core of the 1620 Mayflower voyage, represent one of the earliest and most mythologized chapters in the English colonization of North America. Their story is not merely one of pious refugees seeking religious liberty but a complex narrative of persecution, migration, survival, governance, and eventual integration into the broader colonial project that culminated in the revolutionary fervor of 1776. This dissertation traces their history in its entirety—from the religious dissent that propelled them from England to Holland, through the establishment and maturation of Plymouth Colony, to the enduring ideological legacy that informed the American Declaration of Independence.
The origins of the Pilgrim Fathers lie in the late Elizabethan and early Jacobean religious turmoil. In the late 16th century, a radical faction within English Puritanism, known as Separatists, rejected the Church of England’s retention of Catholic ceremonies and episcopal hierarchy. Viewing the established church as irredeemably corrupt, they advocated complete separation. Key figures emerged from the rural Nottinghamshire village of Scrooby: William Brewster, a former diplomatic secretary who became their elder; John Robinson, their pastor; and William Bradford, a young farmer who would later chronicle their experiences. Under King James I’s intensified persecution following the 1605 Gunpowder Plot and the 1604 Hampton Court Conference, Separatists faced fines, imprisonment, and potential execution for illegal conventicles. In 1607–1608, approximately 300 members of the Scrooby congregation fled first to Amsterdam and then to Leiden in the Dutch Republic, where they enjoyed relative toleration under the Calvinist Dutch Reformed Church. For over a decade, they worked as artisans, printers, and laborers, but economic hardship, cultural assimilation fears (their children adopting Dutch ways), and the looming end of the Twelve Years’ Truce with Spain prompted a bold decision: emigration to the New World.
Securing a patent from the Virginia Company of London in 1619 and financial backing from the Merchant Adventurers of London, the Leiden group—joined by “Strangers” (non-Separatists) seeking opportunity—departed on the Mayflower in September 1620. The 102 passengers endured a stormy 66-day crossing marked by disease and dissension. Blown off course by gales, they anchored at Cape Cod on November 11, 1620 (Old Style calendar), outside Virginia’s jurisdiction. To prevent anarchy, 41 adult male passengers signed the Mayflower Compact, a covenant establishing a “civil body politic” for “just and equal laws” based on majority consent. This document, drafted in Provincetown Harbor, is widely regarded as America’s first written constitution, embodying covenant theology and self-government. After exploring, the settlers chose Plymouth Harbor on December 21, 1620.
The “Starving Time” of the first winter decimated the colony. Lacking adequate provisions and facing a harsh New England climate, nearly half the passengers perished from scurvy, pneumonia, and exposure. Only 52 survived to spring 1621. Crucial alliances formed with local Wampanoag peoples: Samoset and Tisquantum (Squanto), the latter a Patuxet survivor of English captivity who taught corn cultivation, fishing, and diplomacy. In March 1621, Governor John Carver and military leader Myles Standish negotiated a peace treaty with Massasoit, sachem of the Wampanoag Confederacy. The autumn 1621 harvest feast, attended by 90 Wampanoag guests, later mythologized as the “First Thanksgiving,” symbolized fragile coexistence. Under Bradford’s governorship (elected 1621 and re-elected for most of the next three decades), Plymouth stabilized through communal labor (abandoned for private plots in 1623), fur trade, and fishing. Additional ships brought reinforcements: the Fortune (1621), Anne and Little James (1623), and the Mayflower’s final passengers.
Plymouth’s political evolution reflected Separatist ideals of congregational autonomy and covenant. The colony operated under a patent from the Council for New England (1621) and later a royal charter attempt, but governance remained local. Town meetings and the General Court (established 1630) embodied participatory democracy. Economically modest compared to the Puritan “Great Migration” to Massachusetts Bay Colony (1630 onward), Plymouth focused on subsistence agriculture, timber, and trade with Native groups and Dutch outposts. Tensions simmered: the 1637 Pequot War and 1643 New England Confederation allied Plymouth with Connecticut, New Haven, and Massachusetts Bay against Native threats. King Philip’s War (1675–1676), triggered by Wampanoag grievances over land encroachment, proved catastrophic. Metacom (King Philip) led a pan-tribal uprising that killed one in ten English colonists and destroyed 12 towns; Plymouth’s militia suffered heavy losses before English victory. The war accelerated Native dispossession and Plymouth’s economic strain.
By 1691, Plymouth’s independence ended. Annexed into the royal Province of Massachusetts Bay under the new charter, its 7,000 inhabitants merged with the larger Puritan commonwealth. Yet the Pilgrim legacy endured. Eighteenth-century New Englanders revered the Mayflower Compact as precedent for consensual government. Historians like Thomas Prince and sermons on Forefathers’ Day (December 22, after calendar reform) portrayed the Pilgrims as proto-republicans fleeing tyranny. By the 1760s–1770s, amid escalating imperial crises—Stamp Act (1765), Townshend Acts (1767), and Intolerable Acts (1774)—Patriot rhetoric invoked Pilgrim heritage. John Adams, a Massachusetts descendant, cited the Compact in his 1765 “Dissertation on the Canon and Feudal Law” as evidence of New England’s ancient liberties. Samuel Adams and the Sons of Liberty framed resistance to Britain as continuation of the Separatist quest for freedom from oppressive authority. The 1774 Continental Congress echoed covenant language; by 1776, Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence articulated principles of natural rights, consent, and self-determination traceable, however indirectly, to Plymouth’s foundational documents. Plymouth Rock, first noted in 1715 and enshrined in 1774, became a revolutionary symbol.
In sum, the Pilgrim Fathers’ history spans more than a century and a half of adaptation—from Leiden exiles to colonial governors, from fragile outposts to integrated provincials. Their theological covenantalism seeded secular republicanism; their survival narrative inspired resilience; their Native diplomacy and conflicts presaged continental expansion. By 1776, as Lexington and Concord ignited open revolt and Philadelphia delegates debated independence, the Pilgrim ethos—liberty of conscience, self-rule, and defiance of distant tyranny—had transcended its modest origins to animate the birth of a nation. Though numerically small and economically secondary to Virginia or Massachusetts Bay, the Pilgrims provided an enduring moral and constitutional archetype. Their complete history until 1776 is thus not peripheral but foundational to American identity, illustrating how religious dissent forged political innovation under adversity.

You may be telling yourself right now:
I WANT A NEW LIFE;
I WANT TO KNOW MY SIN IS FORGIVEN;
I WANT TO KNOW THAT I HAVE ETERNAL LIFE;
I WANT TO RECEIVE HIM NOW;
I WANT TO RECOMMIT MY LIFE TO CHRIST;
I WANT TO SETTLE THIS THING;
I WANT CHRIST TONIGHT:
Please read the following to settle all of this:
HOW TO GET TO HEAVEN WHEN YOU DIE:
How to be “Born Again”
John 3:16 makes it pretty clear: You have to Believe on Jesus Christ and you will be saved! No matter who you are! No matter what you have done wrong in your life, KNOW THAT GOD, JESUS AND THE HOLY SPIRIT LOVES YOU!
To “Believe” upon Jesus means that:
**********************************************************************
1.) You Believe that Jesus is the Son of God, that He died on the Cross at Calvary as payment for ALL of your sins, was buried in a borrowed tomb and Arose from the dead on the 3rd Day we call Easter and accept Him as your Personal Savior by Faith;
**********************************************************************
2. You Repent of your sinful ways (Breaking God’s Laws in the 10 Commandments:
a.) Worship only God,
b.) Have no other gods before Him,
c.) Don’t use His Name in vain,
d.) Remember the Sabbath and keep it Holy,
e.) Honor your Parents,
f.) Don’t kill anyone,
g.) Don’t commit adultery,
h.) Don’t Steal,
i.) Don’t lie about other people or yourself &
j.) Don’t Covet anything that is your neighbors) and try to stop sinning;
*********************************************************************
3.) You give complete control of your life to Jesus Christ!
Doing these 3 things, you will be “Born Again” Spiritually and the Holy Spirit will enter your Soul, SEAL your position PERMANENTLY in Heaven and WRITE YOUR NAME IN THE “LAMB’S BOOK OF LIFE!” Again: See Revelation Chapter 20 Verse 15 to see why that is CRITICALLY important:
“Revelation 20:15 – And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire”

Let us Praise Him Daily!
A good way to learn to Praise God is to memorize the first 6 Verses of Psalms 148:
1 Praise the Lord, O heavens! Praise Him from the skies!
2 Praise Him, all His angels, all the armies of heaven.
3 Praise Him, sun and moon and all you twinkling stars.
4 Praise Him, skies above. Praise Him, vapors high above the clouds.
5 Let everything He has made give praise to Him. For He issued His command, and they came into being;
6 He established them forever and forever. His orders will never be revoked.
PLEASE read the last 6 Chapters of Psalms: 145-150 so that you will learn how to Praise God like David did!

Chapter 23 in Proverbs for today: (APR 23 (MT) (ESV)
23 When you sit down to eat with a ruler,
observe carefully what[a] is before you,
2 and put a knife to your throat
if you are given to appetite.
3 Do not desire his delicacies,
for they are deceptive food.
4 Do not toil to acquire wealth;
be discerning enough to desist.
5 When your eyes light on it, it is gone,
for suddenly it sprouts wings,
flying like an eagle toward heaven.
6 Do not eat the bread of a man who is stingy;[b]
do not desire his delicacies,
7 for he is like one who is inwardly calculating.[c]
“Eat and drink!” he says to you,
but his heart is not with you.
8 You will vomit up the morsels that you have eaten,
and waste your pleasant words.
9 Do not speak in the hearing of a fool,
for he will despise the good sense of your words.
10 Do not move an ancient landmark
or enter the fields of the fatherless,
11 for their Redeemer is strong;
he will plead their cause against you.
12 Apply your heart to instruction
and your ear to words of knowledge.
13 Do not withhold discipline from a child;
if you strike him with a rod, he will not die.
14 If you strike him with the rod,
you will save his soul from Sheol.
15 My son, if your heart is wise,
my heart too will be glad.
16 My inmost being[d] will exult
when your lips speak what is right.
17 Let not your heart envy sinners,
but continue in the fear of the Lord all the day.
18 Surely there is a future,
and your hope will not be cut off.
19 Hear, my son, and be wise,
and direct your heart in the way.
20 Be not among drunkards[e]
or among gluttonous eaters of meat,
21 for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty,
and slumber will clothe them with rags.
22 Listen to your father who gave you life,
and do not despise your mother when she is old.
23 Buy truth, and do not sell it;
buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding.
24 The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice;
he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him.
25 Let your father and mother be glad;
let her who bore you rejoice.
26 My son, give me your heart,
and let your eyes observe[f] my ways.
27 For a prostitute is a deep pit;
an adulteress[g] is a narrow well.
28 She lies in wait like a robber
and increases the traitors among mankind.
29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow?
Who has strife? Who has complaining?
Who has wounds without cause?
Who has redness of eyes?
30 Those who tarry long over wine;
those who go to try mixed wine.
31 Do not look at wine when it is red,
when it sparkles in the cup
and goes down smoothly.
32 In the end it bites like a serpent
and stings like an adder.
33 Your eyes will see strange things,
and your heart utter perverse things.
34 You will be like one who lies down in the midst of the sea,
like one who lies on the top of a mast.[h]
35 “They struck me,” you will say,[i] “but I was not hurt;
they beat me, but I did not feel it.
When shall I awake?
I must have another drink.”

CHAPTER 141 IN PSALMS for today: (APR 23 (TLZ) (ESV)
141 O Lord, I call upon you; hasten to me!
Give ear to my voice when I call to you!
2 Let my prayer be counted as incense before you,
and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice!
3 Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth;
keep watch over the door of my lips!
4 Do not let my heart incline to any evil,
to busy myself with wicked deeds
in company with men who work iniquity,
and let me not eat of their delicacies!
5 Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness;
let him rebuke me—it is oil for my head;
let my head not refuse it.
Yet my prayer is continually against their evil deeds.
6 When their judges are thrown over the cliff,[a]
then they shall hear my words, for they are pleasant.
7 As when one plows and breaks up the earth,
so shall our bones be scattered at the mouth of Sheol.[b]
8 But my eyes are toward you, O God, my Lord;
in you I seek refuge; leave me not defenseless![c]
9 Keep me from the trap that they have laid for me
and from the snares of evildoers!
10 Let the wicked fall into their own nets,
while I pass by safely.

Revelation 08 for today: (APR 23 (NN) ESV)
8 When the Lamb opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. 2 Then I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them. 3 And another angel came and stood at the altar with a golden censer, and he was given much incense to offer with the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar before the throne, 4 and the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before God from the hand of the angel. 5 Then the angel took the censer and filled it with fire from the altar and threw it on the earth, and there were peals of thunder, rumblings,[a] flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.
The Seven Trumpets
6 Now the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to blow them.
7 The first angel blew his trumpet, and there followed hail and fire, mixed with blood, and these were thrown upon the earth. And a third of the earth was burned up, and a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up.
8 The second angel blew his trumpet, and something like a great mountain, burning with fire, was thrown into the sea, and a third of the sea became blood. 9 A third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.
10 The third angel blew his trumpet, and a great star fell from heaven, blazing like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. 11 The name of the star is Wormwood.[b] A third of the waters became wormwood, and many people died from the water, because it had been made bitter.
12 The fourth angel blew his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, and a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of their light might be darkened, and a third of the day might be kept from shining, and likewise a third of the night.
13 Then I looked, and I heard an eagle crying with a loud voice as it flew directly overhead, “Woe, woe, woe to those who dwell on the earth, at the blasts of the other trumpets that the three angels are about to blow!”
Footnotes
- Revelation 8:5 Or voices, or sounds
- Revelation 8:11 Wormwood is the name of a plant and of the bitter-tasting extract derived from it

The Steps to Salvation:
> Repent: Repentance means that you are turning away from sin to turn to Christ. It does NOT mean that you will be perfect.
> Believe/Receive: Salvation is through Faith in Jesus and by the Grace of God. Believing means putting your Faith in Jesus and receiving forgiveness of sin.
>Walk in the Newness of Life: Jesus died so that we might live. We walk in the Newness of Life being Born Again by His Blood.
