The History of Christian Evangelists
The trajectory of American evangelical revivalism in the modern era is epitomized by three towering figures: Dwight L. Moody, Billy Sunday, and Billy Graham.
Each adapted innovative methods to cultural shifts while centering their ministries on the core gospel message of repentance and personal faith in Jesus Christ, influencing millions across generations.
Dwight Lyman Moody (1837–1899) laid the groundwork for urban mass evangelism. Born in rural Massachusetts, Moody converted in Boston and moved to Chicago, where he prospered as a shoe salesman before surrendering his business to full-time Christian work. Through YMCA efforts and slum missions during the Civil War era, he built the Illinois Street Church (later Moody Church). Partnering with gospel singer Ira Sankey, Moody launched extensive revival campaigns in Britain (1873–1875) and American cities, drawing crowds of up to 20,000. His plain-spoken sermons stressed biblical literalism, premillennial return of Christ, and practical piety over theological controversy. Moody founded Moody Bible Institute, publishing houses, and schools that perpetuated his vision.
Billy Sunday (1862–1935), the “Baseball Evangelist,” bridged 19th- and 20th-century revivalism with populist energy. A former Major League outfielder for the Chicago White Stockings, Sunday left athletics in 1891 for YMCA work and independent evangelism by 1896. Ordained Presbyterian in 1903, his dynamic, slang-filled sermons in specially built tabernacles featured dramatic gestures and attacks on vices like alcohol. Supporting the temperance movement, Sunday’s pre-Prohibition crusades drew enormous audiences; he claimed over one million “hit the sawdust trail” for conversion.
Billy Graham (1918–2018) elevated evangelism into the global media age. Converted as a teenager in North Carolina, Graham trained at Florida Bible Institute and Wheaton College. His 1949 Los Angeles crusade catapulted him to fame. Conducting over 400 crusades in 185 countries, Graham preached to approximately 215 million people live, plus billions via radio, TV, and film. His straightforward calls to “decide for Christ,” ecumenical approach, and counsel to U.S. presidents solidified his role as “America’s Pastor.”
These evangelists demonstrate revivalism’s evolution—from Moody’s institutional foundations and urban outreach, Sunday’s theatrical populism amid industrialization, to Graham’s technological sophistication in the postwar world. Their collective impact profoundly shaped Protestant Christianity’s growth and public presence.

How to be “Born Again”
John 3:16 makes it pretty clear: You have to Believe on Jesus Christ and you will be saved! No matter who you are! No matter what you have done wrong in your life, KNOW THAT GOD, JESUS AND THE HOLY SPIRIT LOVES YOU!
To “Believe” upon Jesus means that:

1.) You Believe that Jesus is the Son of God, that He died on the Cross at Calvary as payment for ALL of your sins, was buried in a borrowed tomb and Arose from the dead on the 3rd Day we call Easter and accept Him as your Personal Savior by Faith;

2. You Repent of your sinful ways (Breaking God’s Laws in the 10 Commandments:
a.) Worship only God,
b.) Have no other gods before Him,
c.) Don’t use His Name in vain,
d.) Remember the Sabbath and keep it Holy,
e.) Honor your Parents,
f.) Don’t kill anyone,
g.) Don’t commit adultery,
h.) Don’t Steal,
i.) Don’t lie about other people or yourself &
j.) Don’t Covet anything that is your neighbors) and try to stop sinning;

3.) You give complete control of your life to Jesus Christ!
Doing these 3 things, you will be “Born Again” Spiritually and the Holy Spirit will enter your Soul, SEAL your position PERMANENTLY in Heaven and WRITE YOUR NAME IN THE “LAMB’S BOOK OF LIFE!” Again: See Revelation Chapter 20 Verse 15 to see why that is CRITICALLY important:
“Revelation 20:15 – And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire”

A good way to learn to Praise God is to memorize the first 6 Verses of Psalms 148:
1 Praise the Lord, O heavens! Praise Him from the skies!
2 Praise Him, all His angels, all the armies of heaven.
3 Praise Him, sun and moon and all you twinkling stars.
4 Praise Him, skies above. Praise Him, vapors high above the clouds.
5 Let everything He has made give praise to Him. For He issued His command, and they came into being;
6 He established them forever and forever. His orders will never be revoked.
PLEASE read the last 6 Chapters of Psalms: 145-150 so that you will learn how to Praise God like David did!

JESUS WAS THE SOLUTION BEFORE YOU HAD A SIN PROBLEM,
NEVER GET OVER WHAT JESUS HAS DONE FOR YOU!

5 A faithful witness does not lie,

but mere talk tends only to poverty.

22 Then the angel[a] showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life[b] with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 And night will be no more. Jesus Is Coming

7 “And behold, I am coming soon. Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.”

I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God.”
10 And he said to me, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is near. 11 Let the evildoer still do evil, and the filthy still be filthy, and the righteous still do right, and the holy still be holy.”
12 “Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”
14 Blessed are those who wash their robes,[c] so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates. 15 Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.
16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”
17 The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.
18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.
20 He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!
21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all.[d] Amen.
