Maneuvering for Me

by Charles R. Swindoll

Matthew 20:26–28

I’ll never forget a trip I took with my older son to shoot the rapids at the Rogue River in Oregon. While we were receiving instructions from the guide (there were about fifteen of us in the entire group), I began to study the canoes with my eyes. Some were old and worn, but a few were new. Being selfish, I wanted Curt and me to get the new ones . . . so I whispered in his ear:

“Curt, start moving over to the left.”
“Why?”
“Just do as I say, son. The two canoes on the end are new. Let’s get ’em.”

He cooperated. And we got two of the new ones. I handled it so smoothly, nobody even knew it. The older ones were just as good . . . but they were old.

After canoeing, on the way back to our campsite, all fifteen of us were packed like sardines in this old van. All of a sudden, BOOM! A blowout. All our gear had to come out to get to the spare tire. And then that beast of a van had to be jacked up. It was a hot, dirty job. Guess who directed traffic instead of helping to change the tire? As I recall, not one car passed us on that country road during the entire episode.

Why did I do it? Because I’m selfish, plain and simple.

Now, let me tell you the worst part of it all, and it’s with embarrassment I do so. It was not until the next day that it dawned on me that I was being selfish in any of this. Talk about a blind spot! And to make matters worse, I was teaching my son to be selfish too! At this rate, in a couple of more years, he would have had it down pat.

You see, I learned a lot about looking out for self in school; I perfected it in the Marine Corps; and I developed ways to pull it off with real finesse in seminary, learning to be a minister. Hey, this is the profession where a guy can get away with it and hardly ever be criticized for it . . . even though we should! But who in the world is going to point a finger at a man of the cloth? Who’s willing to touch “God’s anointed” (our favorite title) and risk an advanced case of leprosy?

Like you, I caught the disease of selfishness from Adam. No person has ever lived on this earth completely free of this dreaded plague—except One. That’s right, ever since Adam, only God’s virgin-born Son has had immunity from contamination with sin. He did no sin, knew no sin, had no sin. Being sinless, He lived like no other man ever lived. He spoke as no other man ever spoke. And as that unique Teacher, He cut a new swath. He gave directions that had never been given before by any instructor:

“Whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:26–28)

Developing a Tender Heart
Ezekiel 36:25-28

The Lord wants to give each of us a “heart of flesh” so that we will be pliable and responsive to Him. When touched by the finger of God, a tender heart yields to the pressure and assumes the form He desires, much like a lump of clay that allows the potter to determine the shape of the vessel.

To aid in this process, God has sent the Holy Spirit to indwell each believer and awaken responsiveness in him or her. By yielding to the Spirit’s promptings with ready obedience, the heart becomes increasingly tender and sensitive to His leading. The Lord is able to impart greater understanding of His Word to a soft heart because it has faithfully accepted and obeyed previous teachings.

Any resistance to God will result in hardening. But those who are accustomed to intimacy with Christ—which is the result of submission to Him—will be quick to deal with sin and return to the place of obedience and blessing.

People with tender hearts stay closely connected to the body of Christ, seeking to build up and encourage others in their walk of faith. Such individuals are not only receptive to what God wants to tell them; they are also teachable, in that they are willing to listen and be corrected by others.

This week when you read your Bible and pray, let your heart be soft toward the words of God. As He pokes His finger into each hard area, listen to His instructions, and rely on the Spirit’s power to help you yield and obey. Let Him shape you into a beautiful and useful vessel.

Follow Me

And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” – MATTHEW 4:19

It takes two things to get something accomplished in this life: leadership… and incentive. My wife and I saw this precept in action on a stay at the Peabody Hotel in Orlando, Florida. One afternoon around 4:00, we observed a red carpet rolled out from the front fountain to the elevator. People were waiting on either side of the carpet—we supposed for a dignitary to arrive. But what arrived at 4:00 p.m. was not a dignitary, but a flock of ducks. And these ducks, accompanied by strains of “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” marched right through the lobby, into the elevator, and all the way up to the roof. The crowd applauded wildly. We were amazed. I asked the first employee I saw how these ducks were able to do such a thing. He said, “Well, the environmentalists make sure we don’t keep a duck too long, but we put the ones who have already learned the drill at the front, and they’re the leaders. The other ducks follow them because they know they’re leading them to food. Food’s the incentive, you know.” There it was: leadership and incentive. No Christian should ever live an ineffective life. We have all we need to make an impact on our world. We have a perfect leader—the Lord Jesus Christ—and a glorious incentive. He has promised to make us by grace what we are not by nature. We can become what He called us to be: fishers of men.

You’re on Jesus’ Prayer List

BIBLE MEDITATION:
“Wherefore He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them.” Hebrews 7:25

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
You want a blessed thought? You’re on Jesus’ prayer list. There’s nothing more comforting to me than for someone to tell me they pray for me. I once met a man who said, “Adrian, I prayed for you this morning. I pray for you every day.” That moved me greatly. There are six billion people on this earth. Some people have never been prayed for one time. If you’re on anybody’s prayer list, you’re blessed.

But I can tell you, you’re on Jesus’ prayer list. The Lord Jesus knows you by name, and He calls you by name. Did you come to God by Jesus? Then you’re on His prayer list. The finished work of Jesus is Calvary. The unfinished work of Jesus is His prayer ministry.

ACTION POINT:
Thank Him today for the truth that “He ever lives to make intercession” for you.
